How to plan your room in 5 steps

  1. Measure the room. Measure length, width and ceiling height and note where windows, doors, radiators and sockets are and how big they are.
  2. Set up the room in the planner. Enter the wall dimensions in the 3D room planner and add windows and doors with width, height and hinge side.
  3. Pick furniture that fits. Filter the product list by category, price and width, depth and height in centimetres. That way you only see furniture that really fits your room.
  4. Check the layout. Move and rotate the furniture, show the measurements and make sure walkways and the swing of doors and drawers stay clear.
  5. Order everything together. Put the planned furniture into the cart and order it in one go, even when it comes from different brands.

Rules of thumb for each room

Planning a living room

Start with the sofa as the largest piece and arrange the rest around it. About 40–50 cm between sofa and coffee table feels comfortable, and main walkways need around 80–90 cm. The distance to the TV is usually 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen diagonal.

Planning a bedroom

Leave at least 60–70 cm next to the bed so you can get up and make the bed comfortably. In front of the wardrobe you need room for the open doors; in narrow rooms sliding doors are often the better choice.

Planning a home office

Place the desk side-on to the window if you can, to avoid glare on the screen. About 1 m of free space behind the chair is sensible, and a desk depth of 70–80 cm leaves enough distance to the monitor.

Furnishing a small apartment

Furniture on legs, light colours and pieces with storage make small rooms feel larger. This is where trying every piece to scale before buying pays off most.
